The Bathurst Winter Festival is an innovative newcomer on the NSW festival calendar. Run by Bathurst Regional Council the event aims to attract visitors from across the state to bolster local business by creating a carnival atmosphere embracing the town’s iconic buildings, cooler climate, food and wine.
Established in 2015 as part of Bathurst's bicentenary celebrations, the Festival runs from July 1-16 this year. The event has evolved over the last two years into one of the region's most popular attractions with some 20,000 visitors participating during major weekend activations.
In 2017 visitors can expect a return of the ever-popular outdoor ice rink (sponsored by McDonald’s), illumination of local buildings including Bathurst’s Court House and the Cathedral of St Michael & St John, twilight markets, quality local food and wine as along with fair rides for all the family including a huge Ferris wheel and two-storey carousel.
In a bid gain local backing support again this year, Bathurst Council is encouraging businesses and groups to hold an special events to coincide with the Festival in addition to the town’s window display competition – which it has successfully run in the past.
Bathurst Mayor, Graeme Hanger, OAM, said the Festival had been embraced by the local community and it’s now a much anticipated, annual occasion.
“The event not only attracts residents, but also brings many visitors to our region - which significantly boosts the local economy, so it seems fitting that we are inviting local businesses to get involved,” he says.
“The Winter Festival has been popular since its inception and the event’s reputation and attendance has grown each year. It is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to come together and make the most of the cooler weather and participate in a variety of family-friendly activities.”
